UK Launches First Space Squadron to Defend Satellites
United Kingdom has introduced No. III Space Effects Squadron, its first specialized unit to deal with any adversarial activities aimed at the interests of Britain in outer space. The unit has been created in September 2026 under the umbrella of UK Space Command and will comprise specialist personnel from all branches of the military. It is going to disrupt, degrade and deny any adversarial activities along with providing protection to satellites for defense, communications, and navigation services.
The newly established squadron within the RAF will comprise experts from all parts of the UK military forces and offer capabilities in fighting hostile activity in space.
Its main roles will include the following,
This unit will operate alongside two other squadrons of the RAF – No. I Space Operations Squadron and No. II Space Warning Squadron, which watch for any space activity and issue warnings about possible threats.
Space technology plays a vital role in modern warfare when it comes to communications, navigation, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and missile warnings.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the adversaries have made investments to develop disruptive capabilities for satellite communications. The UK has accused Russia of employing technologies in the field of satellite jamming and approaching satellites in orbit.
This makes space an important strategic domain for the UK.
According to UK Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, space is regarded as another warfare domain, and Britain will position itself to ensure deterrence in space.
Also, he argued that any attack on the space systems of the NATO allies can be seen as triggering Article 5, which provides that an attack on one member state of the alliance will be seen as an attack against all, provided the decision-making procedure of the alliance allows for that.
Furthermore, the UK is concerned about the risks presented by space debris. Any collision between space satellites, moving at very high speeds, will result in debris that will pose a threat to other satellites.
There have been investments of £880 million within four years into space-based ISR and Space Control capabilities in the UK.
The country has also made it clear that there will be no destructive tests of anti-satellite missiles and that it is dedicated to peaceful uses of outer space.
There are plans for the formation of additional space squadrons with one of them dealing with space tactics.
