UN Celebrates First International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations

In a landmark step towards promoting mutual respect, global solidarity, and intercultural understanding, the United Nations has declared 10 June as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, starting in 2025. The inaugural celebration is marked by a UNESCO-hosted event in Paris on 5 June 2025, in collaboration with the Permanent Delegation of the People’s Republic of China. The symposium titled “Youth Dialogue on the Future along the Silk Roads” aims to revive the spirit of cooperation, cultural exchange, and dialogue among civilizations, particularly through the eyes of the youth.

Why in News?

The day is being commemorated for the first time in 2025 following the UN General Assembly’s adoption of Resolution A/RES/78/286 in June 2024. With growing global tensions, distrust, and cultural divides, the day is seen as a timely intervention to encourage intercultural dialogue as a tool for peacebuilding, inclusivity, and cooperation across civilizations. The event’s focus on youth and the legacy of the Silk Roads underscores the importance of engaging younger generations in fostering a harmonious global community.
