UN Declares 25th May as World Football Day

In a historic and celebratory move, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has declared 25th May as World Football Day. The decision, adopted unanimously on 7 May 2024, commemorates the centenary of football’s global representation during the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics. The resolution, introduced by Libya’s ambassador Taher El-Sonni, acknowledges the cultural, social, and unifying power of the world’s most popular sport — football.

Why in News?

On 7 May 2024, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to observe 25 May every year as World Football Day. The declaration aligns with the 100th anniversary of football’s inclusive global representation at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. The resolution was co-sponsored by over 160 UN member nations, showing broad global support.
