In July 2026, Sarnath got included in the UNESCO World Heritage List which helped Uttar Pradesh strengthen its position as one of the wealthiest cultural heritage sites of India. Sarnath Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026

The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath was designated as the 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site, on July 25, 2026, at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

This designation adds to the magnificent achievements it has attained by making a mark on India’s Buddhist heritage and also uplift Uttar Pradesh to the status of a leading tourist attraction.

Sarnath is considered by some as the sacred site of Buddhism because it is the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after his enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. This sermon, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, was the first speech made by the Buddha.

The nomination for its enrollment into UNESCO was sent to UNESCO by the Government of India in the form of the nomination titled “Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath” in the 2025-2026 cycle.

1. Agra Fort

It is situated on the Yamuna River bank, Agra Fort exemplifies Mughal military architecture at its best. Constructed mainly by Emperor Akbar in 1565 A.D., this fort was used as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors until the capital was moved to Delhi. The Agra Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1983 and is an amalgam of architectural styles of the Persian, Timurid, and Indian origin.

Although it was later deserted, probably due to shortages of water, the city is known to be one of the best examples of the Mughal town planning and architecture.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year of 1986, in the year of the establishment of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
