Union Cabinet Approves ₹1,853 Crore Four-Lane Highway Project in Tamil Nadu
In a key infrastructure move aimed at boosting regional connectivity in Tamil Nadu, the Union Cabinet on July 1, 2025, approved the construction of a four-lane highway between Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram. The project, part of National Highway-87 (NH-87), will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a capital cost of ₹1,853 crore. This strategic upgrade is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve safety, and support the socio-economic growth of the region.
The project made headlines after Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the Cabinet’s decision to upgrade the 46.7 km Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram section of NH-87. The announcement comes at a time when the region is experiencing rising traffic volumes and demands for improved infrastructure to support tourism, trade, and local industries.
