United Nations Day 2025 – History, Significance, and Objectives
Every year, 24th October is celebrated as United Nations Day across the world. The day marks the anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Organisation (UNO) in 1945. It serves as a reminder of the UN’s continuous efforts toward global peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
In 2025, the UNO has emphasized its mission to spread the values and principles of the UN Charter to every part of the world — reaffirming its commitment to peace, equality, and environmental protection.
The United Nations was officially established on 24th October 1945, after the United Nations Conference held in San Francisco, where 50 countries came together to draft and sign the UN Charter.
The primary objective was to prevent another global war and ensure that nations could cooperate to solve international problems peacefully.
The founding of the UN was a response to the devastation caused by the two World Wars. The organization aimed to create a framework where disputes could be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, not through conflict.
The United Nations Organisation (UNO) continues to work toward its central goals of promoting peace, security, and development worldwide. Its major objectives include:
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has five permanent members, commonly known as the P5 nations —
United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.
(Note: India, Turkey, and Canada are not permanent members but actively participate in UN initiatives.)
These nations play a crucial role in maintaining peace and resolving international disputes. The UN General Assembly, UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO, and UNDP are among the many bodies working under the UN umbrella to address global challenges such as education, health, women’s empowerment, and environmental protection.
United Nations Day is celebrated to:
On this day, the UN organizes cultural programs, exhibitions, speeches, and global discussions to remind people of the importance of unity among nations.
In recent years, the UN has focused on sustainable development through its 2030 Agenda, including 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals aim to eradicate poverty, ensure quality education, promote gender equality, and combat climate change.
The UN also celebrates special observances such as:
