United Nations Public Service Day 2025
Each year on June 23, the world observes United Nations Public Service Day to honor the vital contributions of public servants and the public sector in driving development and improving the quality of life for citizens across the globe. The day acknowledges the value and virtue of public service, celebrates excellence in public administration, and encourages youth participation in governance.
The main objectives of UN Public Service Day include:
Recognizing the contribution of public servants to national development.
Celebrating innovation and excellence in public service delivery.
Encouraging young people to consider careers in the public sector.
Highlighting the importance of professional and effective public institutions in achieving global goals, especially the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The celebration of UN Public Service Day was established through United Nations General Assembly Resolution 57/277, adopted on 20 December 2002. The first official observance and the inaugural UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) ceremony took place in 2003.
Since its inception, this observance has grown into a global event that not only recognizes innovative achievements in public administration but also reinforces the message that inclusive, transparent, and responsive governance is key to sustainable development.
The United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) are considered the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. They are presented annually to public institutions that demonstrate creative approaches, impactful innovations, and inclusive strategies that lead to more effective governance.
These awards aim to:
Promote the professionalism and visibility of public service.
Share best practices across different countries and regions.
Foster a culture of knowledge exchange and peer learning in public administration.
In 2016, the UNPSA was revised to align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, reflecting a broader vision of how public service transformation can drive progress toward achieving the SDGs.
The 2025 United Nations Public Service Forum will be hosted in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from June 23 to 25, 2025. The event is co-organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) through its Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) in collaboration with the Government of Uzbekistan.
This year’s theme reflects the urgency of accelerating innovation and performance in public service as the world enters the final stretch toward achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The Forum will feature:
Ministerial roundtables
Capacity-building workshops
