University of Wollongong Opens India Campus at Gujarat’s GIFT City

In a significant move to expand its global presence, Australia’s University of Wollongong (UOW) has officially inaugurated its India campus at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar. The new campus, offering Master’s degrees in Financial Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Financial Technology, marks a strategic entry into the Indian educational landscape, aligning with India’s rapidly growing fintech sector. This development comes on the heels of Deakin University’s opening of its own campus in GIFT City earlier in July 2024.

Campus Launch Details

UOW’s India campus, initially delayed due to weather and infrastructure challenges, officially began operations in November 2024. Despite the setbacks, the university organized pre-launch events to introduce students to the campus experience. The delay did not deter enthusiasm, as the campus aims to cater to diverse learners from fresh graduates to mid-career professionals. This campus will offer stackable programs in fintech-related fields, with courses like Fintech Foundations, Cyber Security, and AI/ML for Fintech Applications, ensuring students remain aligned with the fast-evolving needs of the sector.

Global Learning at Doorstep

Marisa Mastroianni, managing director at UOW Global Enterprises, emphasized the campus’s role in bringing Australia’s world-class education closer to Indian students, reducing the need to travel abroad. The initiative offers a seamless global learning experience, mirroring the standards of UOW’s campuses in Dubai, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Students will also benefit from unique opportunities, including a fully-funded trip to UOW’s Dubai campus as part of the first cohort’s experience.

Partnerships Strengthen Presence

The launch of UOW’s India campus also highlights the close ties between the Australian government and GIFT City. Through the NSW-Gujarat sister-state agreement, the NSW government has been instrumental in facilitating the university’s expansion in India, fostering relationships with government officials and businesses in Gujarat. The collaboration with GIFT City is poised to drive innovation and contribute to the region’s thriving educational and technological ecosystem.
