Gen. Naravane and former US Defense Secretary honoured for fostering Indo-US relations

The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) has recognised former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane for his contribution to fostering ties between India and the US. The public service award has also been given to former US Defense Secretary General Jim Mattis in addition to Naravane. The USISPF gave prizes for public service and global leadership to those who had a significant impact on advancing connections between the US and India.

KEY POINTS:

  • General Mattis attempted to make India a US strategic ally while serving as the Defense Secretary.
  • According to the USISPF, Gen. Naravane improved defence alliances and increased interoperability between the US and India while serving as the Chief of Staff of the Indian Army.
  • Gen. Naravane retired on April 30 and has since moved into his newly assigned residence in Delhi Cantonment.
  • In his illustrious four-decade military career, Naravane had the distinction of holding important command and staff positions in both peace and combat, in the North-East and in Jammu & Kashmir. He also served in Sri Lanka with the Indian Peace Keeping Force.
  • Former Indian Army Chief led a Strike Corps in the Western Theatre, created an Infantry Brigade, was Inspector General of the Assam Rifles (North), and commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion.
  • In addition to two stints at the Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army), New Delhi, his staff assignments included stints as a Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Defence Attache in Yangon, Myanmar, and Directing Staff in the Higher Command Wing at the Army War College.
