USA Independence Day 2023: Date, Background, Significance and Celebration

The United States is celebrating its 247th Independence Day this year on 4th July. Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States to commemorate the declaration of Independence. The celebration of Independence Day in U.S. is associated with parade, fireworks, carnival, fairs, picnics, political speeches, games and ceremonies. This day is considered to be a National Day of U.S.

Background of Independence Day of U.S.:

During the American resolution, the second continental congress voted for the resolution of Independence, the thirteen colonies were legally separated from Great Britain in 1776 on July 2nd. On 2nd July 1776, US officially adopted the Declaration of Independence.

John Adam who was prominent leader of American War of Independence and U.S.’s 2nd president, predicted 2nd July to be the Independence Day of U.S. and in a letter to his wife, he wrote, “The second day of July, 1776, will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illumination, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.”

Congress debated and approved it two days off later i.e. 4th July was considered to be U.S.’s Independence Day from thereon. Congress passed a bill to make Independence Day a federal holiday on 28th June, 1870. The law was amended in 1941 to make it a paid holiday for federal employees.

Events led to Independence of U.S.:

• American Revolution starts in 1775.
• On 2nd July, 1776, the continental congress voted for the resolution of Independence.
• On 4th July, 1776, the continental congress approved the final draft of declaration of Independence.
• 1st Independence Day of U.S. is celebrated on 4th July, 1777.

How is U.S. Independence Day Celebrated?

The celebration of United States Independence Day includes parade, fireworks, decorations, picnics and other. People engage in various tradition, festivities and patriotic displays to celebrate this day.

• Fireworks: People gather to watch the immense firework which is a hallmark of the U.S. Independence day celebration.
• Decorations: People display the American flags outside their homes and offices.
• Parades: Parades featuring bands is an important part of celebration of this day.

Significance of U.S. Independence Day:

Independence Day of United States is a significant occasion for all Americans. 4th July reminds them the struggle of their forefather to build a nation based on principles of equality, freedom and justice. American Independence day is to recall the founding values of the nation and their freedom.
