Uttar Pradesh bags First Prize for Best State in Inland Fisheries

Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of the Yogi Adityanath government, has secured a notable ‘Best State’ award for inland fisheries (plain areas). The state is set to receive this prestigious accolade at the two-day Global Fisheries Conference-2023 in Delhi on November 21 and 22. Cabinet Minister for Fisheries, Sanjay Nishad, announced this achievement, attributing it to the relentless efforts of the government to promote fisheries and elevate the income of fishermen.

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojna Impact

The success in fisheries is further underscored by the implementation of 31 projects under the Pradhan Mantri Sampada Yojna in Uttar Pradesh. A substantial sum of Rs.15,282.5 has been disbursed to beneficiaries as part of these initiatives. This financial support aims to empower individuals involved in the fisheries sector and contribute to the overall growth of the industry.

Visionary Approach of Chief Minister

Sanjay Nishad highlighted the visionary approach of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose strategic vision has propelled Uttar Pradesh to the top position in inland fish farming across the country. Initiatives supporting fish farming have been implemented, leading to a significant increase in fish production over the past six and a half years.

Impressive Growth in Fish Production

The fisheries department reported a remarkable increase in fish production, with this year’s value reaching 9.15 lakh metric tonnes compared to last year’s 8.09 lakh metric tonnes. Additionally, fish seed production has seen a notable rise, reaching 36,187 lakh metric tonnes compared to the previous year’s 27,128 lakh metric tonnes.

Welfare Measures for Fisherman

The Minister shed light on the Fisherman Accident Insurance Scheme, which has benefited 1,16,159 fishermen in the state. The scheme provides financial assistance of Rs.5 lakh to the families of fishermen who lose their lives in accidents, Rs.2.5 lakh for those who become disabled and Rs.25,000 for the injured. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to the well-being of those involved in the fisheries sector.

Expansion of Ranching and Infrastructural Development

Noteworthy advancements have been made in expanding ranching, which was initially limited to 12 districts but has now extended to 68 districts. Furthermore, to establish the state as a fisheries hub, an ultra-modern fish mall is under construction in Chandauli with an investment of Rs.62 crore. This initiative aligns with the border goal of boosting the fisheries sector’s infrastructure.

Financial Support and Training Initiatives

The Yogi government’s commitment to supporting fishermen is evident in the approval of bank loans worth Rs.10,772.77 lakh for 14,021 fishermen this year. Additionally, the fisheries department has provided training in fish farming to over 1,500 fishermen, emphasizing the importance of skill development in sustaining the growth of the fisheries industry.
