The Vivek Express holds the title of the longest train route in the country which runs from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. It covers 4247 km of distance and nine States. There is a network of more than ten thousand kilometers of railway lines. This network connects the far and near states together. The farthest Indian railway network is 4247 km long, which is also the longest train route in the country both in terms of distance and time.

Vivek Express: History

The Vivek Express is a chain of Express trains on the Indian railway network. The railway budget of 2011-12 was announced about the Vivek Express by the then Railways Minister. These Express trains started to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda which was held in 2013. From this chain of Express trains, one of the Vivek Express trains that go from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari is the longest route on the Indian railway networks in terms of both distance and time and it is currently the 24th longest railway network in the world. On its way, the train crosses a total of 9 states with 58 stops. The train goes through Assam, Nagaland, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nādu.

Under the Vivek Express initiation, Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari route was one of the four routes that work out on the Indian map. The other Vivek Express trains have different routes which are Okha, Gujarat to Thoothukudi Tamil Nadu; Bandra to Mumbai to Katra, Jammu; Howrah, West Bengal to Bengaluru Karnataka. The Vivek Express ranks 24th in the world’s longest train route, the first position is held by the Trans-Siberian railway that connects Moscow and Vladivostok, it takes 6 days and covers 9250 kilometers of the journey to complete the railway network.

  1. Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari Vivek Express- The Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari Vivek Express is number 15905/15906 and it is a weekly train. It is the longest train route in the Indian railway networks. It connects Dibrugarh in Assam, not East India to Kanyakumari Tamil Nadu which is the southernmost tip of mainland India. The network covers a total of 4247 km from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari and it takes 79 hours to cover this distance within 58 stoppages.
  2. Okha to Tuticorin Vivek Express- this is also a weekly train and numbers 19567/19568. It connects Okha, Gujarat to Thoothukudi in Tamil Nādu. The train covers 3043 km in 54.25 hours. It passes through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nādu. The train is religiously important as it joins two religious significant places in India Lord Krishna’s Dwarka and Rameshwaram which is close to Thoothukudi.
  3. Bandra Terminus Jammu Tawi Vivek Express- The train number is 19027/19028 and this is also a weekly train. It connects Bandra Terminus, Mumbai to Jammu Tawi, in North India. The train goes through Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Abu Road, Jodhpur, Degana, Sujangarh, Churu, Sadulpur, Hisar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Chakki Bank, and bypassing Delhi NCR.
  4. Santragachi Mangalore Central Vivek Express- The train number is 22851/22852 and this is also a weekly train. The santragachi Mangalore Central Vivek Express connects santragachi which is a town of Howrah, Kolkata in West Bengal, and Mangalore Central in Karnataka. This train comes under the superfast category of the Indian Railways unlike the other Vivek expresses. This train passes through West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.
