VSHORADS 4th Gen Missile Tested by DRDO

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out three flight-tests of the advanced fourth-generation Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan on October 3-4. The tests mark a significant step in enhancing India’s defense capabilities, showcasing the missile’s precision and reliability in engaging fast-moving aerial targets.

Details of test

The missile system was tested against high-speed aerial targets, showcasing its ability to intercept at,

  • Maximum range
  • Maximum altitude
  • These critical parameters demonstrated the system’s capability for engaging fast-moving threats.
  • The successful trials pave the way for Early user trials and Rapid production in a short span, aligning with the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India).

Ministry Remarks

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three flight tests of the fourth generation, technically-advanced, miniaturized Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at the Pokhran field firing ranges.
  • The development of VSHORADS missiles has been completed and two production agencies have been engaged in the development-cum-production partner (DcPP) mode.

Defence Minister Remarks

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army for the flight tests of the missile system.
  • Singh said this new missile, equipped with modern technologies, will give further technological boost to the armed forces against aerial threats.
  • VSHORADS is a man-portable air defense system designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories.

About VSHORADS

Generation

  • It is a fourth-generation Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) specially designed to counter low-altitude aerial threats over short distances.

Type

  • These are short-range, lightweight, and portable surface-to-air missiles that can be fired by individuals or small groups.

Designed By

  • It has been designed and developed indigenously by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian industry partners.

Features

  • It is designed to provide short-range air defense capabilities to protect ground forces and critical assets from aerial threats, including helicopters and low-flying aircraft.
  • It has a range of up to 6-km.
  • The missile incorporates many novel technologies, including a Dual-band IIR Seeker, a miniaturized Reaction Control System, and integrated avionics.
  • It is propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor.
  • The missile and its launcher were designed by the DRDO to be portable, which enables their quick deployment over difficult terrain.
