Every Diwali, fireworks light up the sky with joy and color — but they also bring pollution and health risks. To solve this, scientists introduced green crackers, an eco-friendly alternative that creates less smoke and noise while keeping the festive fun alive. These innovative firecrackers are designed to protect the environment, making celebrations cleaner, safer, and more sustainable for everyone.
Regular firecrackers are the traditional ones that most people use during festivals.
However, they release a large amount of smoke and harmful chemicals when burnt. These crackers usually contain lead, barium, aluminum, and nitrates — toxic compounds that mix with air and cause serious air pollution and health issues like breathing problems, allergies, and eye irritation.
They also produce loud sounds, which can harm children, animals, and elderly people. That’s why there was an urgent need for a safer, greener alternative.
Green crackers are specially designed firecrackers that produce 30% less pollution than regular ones. Developed by CSIR–NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute), they use eco-friendly materials and controlled chemical compositions to reduce toxic gases, noise, and dust particles.
Green crackers are approved by the Government of India and are part of the effort to make Diwali celebrations more environment-friendly.
Green crackers are divided into three main types, each made to reduce pollution in a different way:
These crackers release tiny water molecules when they burst. The moisture helps to absorb dust particles and reduce air pollution. The smoke from these crackers is much lighter and less harmful.
In these crackers, only a small amount of aluminum is used. This helps control both the sound level and metallic emissions, making them safer for health and the environment.
STAR crackers are completely free from sulfur and potassium nitrate, which are common causes of smoke and toxic gases in regular crackers. As a result, these crackers emit very little smoke and do not release harmful pollutants into the air.
A common question people ask is — “Do green crackers cause pollution at all?”
The answer is yes, but much less than regular firecrackers.
According to NEERI, green crackers reduce emissions by about 30%. While they are not 100% pollution-free, they are a significant improvement over traditional crackers. They help balance festive joy with environmental responsibility.
