What Is the ‘Made in India Brand Scheme’? A Game-Changer For Manufacturing?

To boost the manufacturing India is planning to launch the Made in India Brand Scheme which is aimed to strengthen the domestic production and reducing import dependence in key sectors. The government plans to identify nearly 100 products which are either not made in India or produced in limited quantities. This move signals the next big step towards to becoming manufacturing powerhouse.

What Is the New Made in India Brand Scheme?

The newly proposed Made in India Brand Scheme is designed to create the trusted identity for products manufactured within India.

The idea is not just to increase production outcome but also to improve the perception of Indian made products in the both domestic and international markets.

According to the announcement by the DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia at the CII Annual Business Summit 2026 , the government has already shortlisted the several products for expansion.

These includes the industrial and automotive components like automobile axles and motorcycle parts where the domestic production either remains insufficient or import dependence remains high.

The larger objective is very simple, to manufacture more within India, improve quality and compete globally.

Why This Move Matters for India’s Economy

As India has long aimed to strengthen the its manufacturing base, but imports are continue to dominate several sectors and specially in industrial machinery, electronics, specialized engineering products and advanced components.

This new scheme hold special importance because manufacturing creates the ripple effect across the economy.

A stronger manufacturing ecosystem can lead to,

  • Higher employment generation
  • Increased exports
  • Reduced trade imbalance
  • Stronger supply chain resilience
  • Lower vulnerability to global disruptions

In current time where world affected by supply chain shocks, geopolitical tensions and shifting trade patterns many countries focuses on production security.

The Quality Factor: More Than Just a Label

One of the most important part of this initiative is the planned quality backed certification model.

Several officials have indicated that the scheme will include the,

  • A dedicated Made in India logo
  • Certification for value addition
  • Standardised quality benchmarks

It means that branding exercise will go beyond patriotic messaging. It aims to create the consumer trust.

How Free Trade Agreements Could Support This Strategy

As India has recently become more active to sign and pursuing the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with several countries.

These agreements will lowers the tariff barriers and improve market access.

However these FTAs only create real economic advantage when the domestic industries are capable of supplying competitive products.

India’s Broader Manufacturing Vision

This initiative also aligns with the India’ larger industrial policy direction.

It connects naturally with,

  • Make in India
  • Atmanirbhar Bharat
  • PLI Schemes
  • Export competitiveness strategy
