Every city has a story behind its name, and many have changed over time due to history, culture, or language. The capital of Karnataka, now a global hub for technology and education, also has an older name rooted in local tradition. This name reflects a unique legend from centuries ago and shows how even simple events can shape the identity of a great city.
Bengaluru, earlier called Bangalore, is the capital of Karnataka and one of India’s biggest cities. Founded in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I, it has grown into the country’s leading IT hub, often called the “Silicon Valley of India.” The city is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and fast-growing economy. With modern infrastructure and opportunities, Bengaluru continues to attract people and businesses from across India and the world.
The old name of Bengaluru was Bendakaluru, which means “the town of boiled beans” in Kannada. According to legend, a Hoysala king was once offered boiled beans by a poor woman when he was lost in the forest. Impressed by her kindness, he named the place Bendakaluru. Over time, the name changed to Bengaluru, later anglicized to Bangalore, before being officially restored as Bengaluru in 2014.
According to legend, King Veera Ballala II of the Hoysala dynasty once lost his way while hunting in the forest. Hungry and tired, he was offered a simple meal of boiled beans by an old woman. Touched by her kindness, the king named the place Bendakaluru, or “the town of boiled beans,” in her honor.
While the legend is popular, the name Bengaluru appears even earlier. Inscriptions dating back to the 9th century, found in Begur near present-day Bengaluru, already mention the name. This shows that the city’s old name was in use much before the legend of King Ballala.
On 1 November 2014, the government formally changed the city’s name back to Bengaluru. On the same day, names of other cities like Mysore (Mysuru) and Mangalore (Mangaluru) were also updated to reflect their traditional Kannada names.
