Madhya Pradesh is a state known for its rich wildlife, natural beauty, and historical heritage. Among its many districts, one place holds a very special title because of its unique connection with rare and remarkable animals. This district has become famous across India for its link to a special type of lion that is not commonly found anywhere else in the world.
Madhya Pradesh is a large state located in the middle of India, which is why it is often called the “Heart of India.” Its capital city is Bhopal. The state shares its borders with Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Madhya Pradesh is known for its long and rich history, valuable mineral resources, and famous cultural places. It has the largest diamond and copper reserves in the country and is home to important heritage sites like the Khajuraho temples.
The district of Rewa in northeastern Madhya Pradesh is known as the “City of White Lions” or “Land of White Tigers.” This title comes from the discovery of the very first recorded white tiger in the world. The white tiger, named Mohan, was found in 1951 in the forests of the Rewa region.
Mohan was discovered and captured by Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa. He later started a breeding program, and today, almost all white tigers in zoos around the world are descendants of Mohan. This makes Rewa extremely important in the history of white tigers.
To preserve this unique heritage, the MMSJ White Tiger Safari and Zoo was opened in Mukundpur, located on the border of Rewa and Satna districts. Visitors can see white tigers here, making it a major tourist attraction and a symbol of Rewa’s wildlife legacy.
Rewa district lies on the Vindhya plateau and is watered by the Tons River and its tributaries. It is known for:
