Which Indian State Has the Lowest Female Population?

India is a vast country with many states, each having a different population size and gender ratio. Some states have a balanced number of males and females, while others have a lower female population due to various reasons like migration, social factors and historical trends. Understanding which state has the lowest female population helps us learn about these differences and the need for gender balance in society.

Indian States and Union Territories

India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories. States have their own governments, while Union Territories are governed by the central government. Each state and territory has unique cultures, languages and traditions. They play an important role in India’s administration and development.

Indian State with the Lowest Female Population

Haryana has the lowest female population compared to males in India. As per the 2011 Census, the state had only 879 women for every 1,000 men. This imbalance is linked to social practices, low awareness, and gender inequality. With better education, health care, and equal opportunities, the sex ratio can improve over time.

Reasons for the Low Sex Ratio in Haryana

Haryana’s low female population is due to several reasons:

  • Preference for male children: Many familiar prefer to have sons instead of daughters.
  • Female infanticide: In the past, some people killed baby girls because they wanted boys.
  • Gender discrimination: Girls often face fewer opportunities for education and healthcare.

Sex Ratio in Other States

Haryana has the lowest sex ratio, but other states also have a low number of females:

  • Jammu & Kashmir: 883 females per 1,000 males
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands: 878 females per 1,000 males
  • Delhi (NCT): 866 females per 1,000 males
