Across Asia, countless villages rest among hills, forests, and rivers, each carrying its own charm and traditions. Yet, one village stands apart for something truly special—its unmatched cleanliness and discipline. With spotless paths, fresh air, and surroundings free from waste, it shows how simple habits can create a healthy living space. This place proves that true beauty begins with care for nature and community.
The cleanest village in Asia is Mawlynnong. It is located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, near Cherrapunjee and close to the India–Bangladesh border.
Mawlynnong is a small village with about 500–900 residents living in nearly 100 homes. Most people belong to the Khasi tribe, one of the main tribal communities of Meghalaya.
In 2003, Discover India magazine gave Mawlynnong the title “Cleanest Village in Asia.” Since then, it has become a popular destination for tourists, nature lovers, and researchers.
Mawlynnong is about 90 km from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. The village is surrounded by:
Stone pathways, bamboo fences, and clean air make the village look like a garden. Because of this, many people call it “God’s Own Garden.”
Cleanliness in Mawlynnong is not forced by the government. It comes from the habit and responsibility of the villagers.
Hand-made bamboo baskets are placed all around the village for garbage collection.
Food waste and leaves are turned into natural fertilizer for farming.
About 130 years ago, a deadly cholera disease spread in this region. Many villagers died. After that, people realized that dirty surroundings caused illness.
Early Christian teachers also encouraged hygiene and discipline. Slowly, cleanliness became a part of the village culture and daily life.
Mawlynnong has achieved 100% literacy, which means everyone can read and write.
