Which Lake is known as the Lake Above the Ocean?

Did you know that there is a lake in the world that lies so high that it feels like it is floating above the ocean? This unique lake is surrounded by mountains and offers breathtaking views that amaze travelers and geographers alike.

Located at a very high altitude, this lake sits thousands of meters above sea level. Because of its height, the air around it is thin, and the climate is much cooler compared to nearby regions. It creates a special natural environment.

The lake is not only known for its height but also for its beauty and cultural importance. Many local communities live around it and depend on it for their daily needs, traditions and livelihood.

Tourists from around the world visit this place to enjoy its calm waters, scenic landscapes and peaceful surroundings. The journey to reach the lake itself becomes an unforgettable experience.

This fascinating lake has earned a special nickname due to its elevation, making it one of the most interesting natural wonders on Earth.

Which Lake is known as the Lake Above the Ocean?

The lake known as the “Lake Above the Ocean” is Sørvágsvatn, also called Leitisvatn.

It is located on Vágar Island in the beautiful Faroe Islands. This lake is the largest in the region and covers about 3.4 square kilometers.

Why is it called the Lake Above the Ocean?

The name comes from a stunning optical illusion. From certain viewpoints, the lake appears to sit hundreds of feet above the ocean, as if it is floating in the air.

In reality, the lake is only about 30 meters above the sea level. The illusion happens because of steep cliffs surrounding the lake. These cliffs hide the true height difference and make the lake look much higher than it actually is.

Formation of Sørvágsvatn

Sørvágsvatn was formed during the last Ice Age. Huge glaciers moved across the land and carved deep basins into the hard volcanic rocks.

When the ice melted thousands of years ago, these basins filled with freshwater, creating the lake. The area is made of basalt rock formed by volcanic activity nearly 50-60 million years ago.

Unique Features of the Lake

  • Waterfall into the Ocean: The lake flows into the Atlantic Ocean through a beautiful waterfall called Bøsdalafossur Waterfall, which drops about 30 meters from the cliff.
  • Depth Below Sea Level: Although the lake looks high above the ocean, its deepest point reaches around 59 metres, meaning parts of its bottom lie below sea level.
  • A Place with Two Names: People living in different parts of the island use different names. Those in the west call it Sørvágsvatn, while people in the east prefer Leitisvatn.
  • Role in World War II: During World War II, the British Army used the lake as a base for seaplanes. They also built an airfield nearby, which later became the modern Vágar Airport.
  • Natural Sound Effects: The horseshoe-shaped cliffs around the lake create a specific acoustic effect. The sound of ocean waves becomes louder and more dramatic in this area.
