Rivers have always played an important role in India’s history, culture, and economy. Some rivers are famous for their size, beauty, or religious significance, while others are known for the treasures they carry. Among these, there is one river that has been particularly important for trade and wealth in the past, making it famous for the precious stones and minerals found along its course.
The river known as the Diamond River of India is the Krishna River. For hundreds of years, it was the main source of some of the finest diamonds in the world. Many famous diamonds, including the Koh-i-Noor and the Hope Diamond, were discovered near this river.
The Krishna River starts in the Western Ghats, near a town called Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra. From there, it flows across several states and finally reaches the Bay of Bengal at Hamsaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh.
The Krishna River travels about 1,400 kilometres from west to east. Along its journey, it moves through mountain valleys, rocky regions, and fertile plains. Before meeting the sea, it forms a large and rich delta in Andhra Pradesh.
The Krishna River flows through four important states:
The Krishna River is famous for its alluvial diamonds, which were carried from underground volcanic sources to the river over millions of years. Some interesting facts about these diamonds include:
The Krishna River is not just about diamonds. It is also home to rare animals like the gharial, a unique type of crocodile, and the smooth-coated otter. Its riverbed deposits fertile soil, which helps farmers grow crops easily.
The largest tributary of the Krishna River is the Tungabhadra River. It has a drainage area bigger than many small countries and contributes significantly to the river’s flow.
The main diamond-bearing areas along the Krishna River are in the Guntur and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh. The famous Kollur Mine on the riverbank produced many historical diamonds. Today, some old diamond mining sites are submerged due to dams like the Pulichintala Dam.
While the Krishna River is known for its historic diamonds, Madhya Pradesh is officially called the Diamond State of India. This is because it has active industrial diamond mines in the Panna district, which produce most of India’s current diamonds. The state’s rich geology and mining resources make it the heart of India’s diamond industry today.
