Some of them earn special nicknames that reflect their speed, power or unique abilities. One such athlete, known for her incredible speed and achievements, has become a source of inspiration for many.
Hima Das, a talented sprinter from Assam, is popularly called the “Dhing Express” because of her incredible speed on the running track. She made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. Hima has also set several records, including breaking the Indian national record in the 400-meter race.
Hima Das was born on 9th February 2000 in Kandhulimari, a village near Dhing in Assam. Her parents, Ronjit Das and Jonali Das, are farmers. Hima is the youngest of five siblings. She studied at Dhing Public High School, where she initially played football and dreamed of a career in the sport. However, after encouragement from a physical education teacher, she shifted her focus to sprinting.
Hima’s Career took off in 2018 when she competed at various international events.
Hima Das completed her 12th board exams in 2019 and is currently pursuing a B.A. degree at Cotton University in Assam. In 2021, she was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam, a prestigious position she earned through direct entry under the state’s Integrated Sport Policy.
Hima Das has become a symbol of perseverance and success, not just for her records but also for inspiring young athletes in India. Her nickname, “Dhing Express,” reflects her speed and determination to succeed. Hima’s achievements have made a national hero, and she continues to inspire the youth of India to chase their dreams.
