The Father of Mobile Phones is Martin Cooper. He was an American engineer who worked at Motorola. On April 3, 1973, he made the first made first mobile phone call using a handheld device. His invention showed that people could talk wirelessly from anywhere. This made to the development of modern mobile phones used all over the world today.

Early Life and Work of Martin Cooper

Martin Cooper was born on December 26, 1928, in the United States. He was an engineer who worked at Motorola, a famous technology company.

During his time at Motorola, he had a new idea. He wanted people to talk on phones anywhere, not just from homes or cars. At that time, phones were mostly fixed or used in vehicles, so his idea was very different and exciting.

The First Mobile Phone Call

On April 3, 1973, Cooper made history by making the world’s first mobile phone call. He made this call while standing on a street in New York City.

Interesting, he called his competitor, Joel Engel, who worked at Bell Labs. During the call, Cooper told him that he was speaking from a real handheld mobile phone. This proved that phones could be portable and not limited to cars or buildings.

The First Mobile Phone – Motorola DynaTAC

The phone used by Cooper was called the Motorola DynaTAC. It was very different from today’s smartphones.

This phone was big and heavy. It weighed about 1.1 kg and was around 10 inches long. It could only talk for about 30 minutes after a full charge and charging took nearly 10 hours. Because of its size, people later called it “The Brick.”

Awards and Recognition

Because of his great contribution, Martin Cooper, received many awards. In 2013, he was honored with the Charles Stark Draper Prize and the Marconi Prize. These are very important awards in the field of engineering and communication.
