WHO Warning For Suicide Causes 1 in 100 Deaths

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised a serious concern about the growing mental health crisis worldwide, especially among young people. According to its latest report, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death globally, accounting for more than one in every 100 deaths. Despite some progress in reducing suicide rates, the WHO stressed that current efforts are not enough to meet global targets, urging governments to take immediate action.

  • Between 2000 and 2021, the age-adjusted suicide rate declined by 35% globally.
  • However, from 2015 to 2030, the global target is a one-third reduction, but progress indicates only a 12% decrease may be achieved.
  • In the Americas, suicide rates increased by 17%, bucking the global trend.

Regional and Income-Based Impact

  • Nearly 75% of suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Wealthier nations show higher rates per population but also have better reporting systems.
  • This disparity makes global comparisons complex but underscores the need for better mental health infrastructure in poorer countries.

Rising Mental Health Disorders

The WHO also warned that mental health disorders like anxiety and depression are increasing at a faster pace than global population growth. Between 2011 and 2021, cases of such disorders rose significantly, pointing to an urgent need for early diagnosis, awareness campaigns, and accessible mental health services.
