Wholesale Price Inflation Hits 9.92% in August 2026
According to the preliminary estimates released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the inflation measured through the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) in India increased to 9.92% in August 2026 from 9.78% in July. This inflation reading is calculated using the newly revised base year 2022-23. According to the readings, the price pressure intensified for many important wholesale commodity groups including food and fuels and power.
The All India WPI of all commodities increased to 110.8 in August from 110.0 in July.
The year-on-year inflation rates for the three major groups are as follows,

Inflation in primary articles was lower than that in July but it was higher in fuels and power.
Some of the key commodity categories that have played an important role in generating wholesale inflation in August include mineral oils, food articles, manufactured food products, basic metals, non-food articles, and chemicals and chemical products.
The WPI food index, which has a weight of 24.99%, recorded inflation of 7.05% in August against 6.65% in July.
The WPI food index consists of food articles within primary articles and manufactured food products within manufactured products.
Along with August data, the government has also released the revised June WPI index for 2026. The revised WPI index was recorded at 110.3 against the provisional estimate of 110.2.
Thus, June’s WPI inflation is now revised from 9.87% to 9.97%.
The final June estimate is based on a weighted response rate of 99.3%, while provisional August estimate is based on a weighted response rate of 84.4%.
The WPI, Output PPI, and trial Input PPI provisional indexes are released on the 14th of the next month, if it is a working day.
Thus, WPI data of September 2026 is supposed to be released on October 14, 2026.
Moreover, the government has provided WPI data of individual items from April 2023 to August 2026 through the Economic Adviser’s portal.
