World Brain Day, also known as International Brain Day, is a worldwide healthcare event that takes place annually on July 22. This observance has been going on for the past nine years and serves as a significant occasion to raise awareness about brain diseases. On this day, diverse local and global organizations and communities come together with the aim of promoting greater awareness, advocacy, and support for healthcare, education, and research related to neurological conditions.
In 2023, the theme for World Brain Day is “Brain Health and Disability: Leave No One Behind.” This global initiative aims to address the knowledge gap and raise awareness about brain health impairments. It also emphasizes the importance of providing high-quality healthcare to individuals with disabilities, in addition to advocating for improved healthcare, education, and research concerning neurological disorders. The overarching goal is to ensure that no one is overlooked or excluded, and that everyone receives the support and attention they need to maintain optimal brain health.
On this day, people from various government and private organisation step forward all over the world to promote awareness about brain health and its associated diseases by conducting various activities such as conducting workshops or open discussions on mental health, sharing their experiences on social media that boost the morale of patients suffering with brain diseases, organising fundraising events for those in need of monetary help to treat their condition, conducting rallies to promote measures to improve brain health.
On July 22, 1957, the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) was established. The idea of observing the 22nd of July as “World Brain Day” originated from a proposal put forth by the Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee. This proposal was presented during the World Congress of Neurology (WCN) Council of Delegates meeting on September 22, 2013, and it received a warm and enthusiastic response from the delegates. Following this positive reception, the Board of Trustees approved the concept in their meeting held in February 2014, making it an annual event to be celebrated on the same date each year.
