World Cities Day 2025 Observed on 31st October
World Cities Day is observed every year on 31 October to raise awareness about global urbanization challenges and promote sustainable urban development. The day also marks the conclusion of Urban October, a month-long initiative led by UN-Habitat to engage the international community in addressing urban issues and achieving the New Urban Agenda.
It was first celebrated in 2014 following the UN General Assembly Resolution 68/239. The observance highlights the need for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities where everyone can live in harmony and prosperity.
The theme for World Cities Day 2025 is “People-Centred Smart Cities.”
The global observance will be hosted in Bogotá, Colombia, on 31 October 2025.
This year’s theme emphasizes that technology and innovation should serve people’s needs and promote inclusive urban growth. It highlights how data-driven decision-making, artificial intelligence (AI), and smart technology can improve urban living conditions, especially in the wake of global crises and challenges.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 31 October as World Cities Day in 2013 to draw global attention to urban challenges and opportunities. It aims to strengthen international cooperation for sustainable urban development and promote cities that are equitable, prosperous, and inclusive.
Urbanization offers the potential for new forms of social inclusion, economic opportunity, and community participation, but it also brings challenges such as inequality and housing shortages. To address these, the New Urban Agenda (2016, Quito) and the Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) aim to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
This report acts as a global reference document for policymakers and researchers working on urban sustainability.
Urban October, launched by UN-Habitat in 2014, is a month-long series of events to promote urban awareness and community engagement. It begins with World Habitat Day (first Monday of October) and ends with World Cities Day (31 October). UN-Habitat plays a leading role in implementing the New Urban Agenda, ensuring that urban growth is inclusive, climate-resilient, and technologically empowered.
