World Soil Day 2025: Focusing on “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities”

Each year on December 5, the world comes together to recognize the life-giving role of soil through World Soil Day (WSD). The 2025 theme, “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities,” shifts the spotlight to urban environments, urging citizens, planners, and governments to rethink the role of soil beneath our cities.

History of World Soil Day

  • First proposed in 2002 by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS)
  • Supported by Thailand and promoted by the Global Soil Partnership under the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
  • Officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2013, with the first celebration held on 5 December 2014

Call to Action: Building Cities from the Ground Up

World Soil Day 2025 invites,

  • Policymakers to adopt soil-friendly urban planning
  • City dwellers to embrace green infrastructure
  • Educators and communities to spread awareness about soil’s vital role in urban sustainability
  • Explore resources, posters, and events at FAO’s World Soil Day platform to join the global movement.

Why Soil Matters More Than You Think

Here’s why soil is essential not just for agriculture, but for urban sustainability, climate action, and public health,

  • Supports Life on Earth: Over 95% of global food production depends on healthy soils. They also supply 15 of the 18 essential chemical elements required by plants.
  • Environmental Regulator: Healthy soil improves water infiltration, stores water for ecosystems, reduces erosion, and maintains a stable environment for microorganisms critical to ecosystems.
  • Fights Climate Change: Through carbon sequestration, soil captures and stores carbon dioxide, helping mitigate the effects of climate change.
  • Maintains Food Quality: Degraded soil reduces nutrients and vitamins in crops, affecting human health and nutrition.

Urban Soil: The Overlooked Lifeline

When we think about soil, we usually picture the countryside. But urban soil is just as critical,

  • Urban Resilience: Permeable and vegetated urban soils absorb rainwater, reduce flood risk, regulate city temperatures, and improve air quality.
  • The Hidden Cost of Cement: When soil is sealed under roads and buildings, it loses these vital functions, increasing risks of urban flooding, heatwaves, and air pollution.
  • Reclaiming the Ground Beneath Us: Cities can restore soil health by integrating green spaces, urban farming, and permeable infrastructure.

Sustainable Soil Management: A Global Need

Practices that promote sustainable soil use are vital for both rural and urban areas,

  • Prevent erosion and pollution
  • Enhance water storage and biodiversity
  • Improve fertility and food security
  • Contribute to carbon storage and climate resilience
