World Thinking Day observed on 22nd February

World Thinking Day 2023

Every year on February 22, the World Organization of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) observes World Thinking Day. The goal of the day is to collect money for the 10 million girl scouts and guides who are active in more than 150 countries while also celebrating sisterhood, solidarity, and women’s empowerment. On World Thinking Day, female scouts are also encouraged to build enduring bonds with one another that prioritise loyalty and respect.

Theme of World Thinking Day

‘Our World, Our Peaceful Future’, the theme for World Thinking Day 2023, explores what one can understand from the ecosystem and how we can cooperate with nature to build a more secure and tranquil future for girls worldwide.

Significance of World Thinking Day

On World Thinking Day, scouts and guides around the world come together to celebrate their shared values and goals. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the scouting movement and the impact it has had on the world. Scouting organisations are international youth organisations that promote leadership, character development, and outdoor skills. Scouting organisations offer a wide range of programs and activities for young people, including camping, hiking, community service, and leadership development.

History of World Thinking Day

The necessity for World Thinking Day was raised back in 1926 at the fourth female scout international conference. The conference agreed on dedicating February 22 as Thinking Day. Lord Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts of America, and his wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell, who served as the organisation’s first global head guide, were both born on February 22.

Six years later, during the 7th World Conference in Bucze, Poland in 1932, delegates highlighted that presents are typically given on birthdays, thus girls may convey their gratitude by giving presents to the International Movement by donating on Thinking Day.
