Yoweri Museveni Sworn In for Seventh Term as Uganda President

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has created the landmark milestone as he has been sworn in as seventh term as President and extends one of the longest political regions in the modern Africa. The 81 year old leader Museveni first came into the power in year1986 and secured a decisive victory in the Uganda’s January 2026 presidential election.

Museveni Extends His Rule After 40 Years in Power

Yoweri Museveni took the oath as President in Uganda’s capital Kampala with the presence of thousands of supporters.

The swearing in ceremony has marked another historic political moment for the country.

Museveni has now completed the nearly four decades in power and making him one of the Africa’s longest-serving heads of state.

According to the Uganda’s Electoral Commission he had won 71.65% of the vote in the January presidential election.

While his main challenger Mr. Bobi Wine has received the 24.72%.

Who Is Yoweri Museveni?

Yoweri Museveni has dominated the Uganda’s politics for the 4 decades.

He came to power in the year 1986 after leading a rebel movement that overthrew the previous government.

Many supporters credit him with the,

  • Stabilizing Uganda after political chaos
  • Driving economic reforms
  • Improving infrastructure
  • Strengthening regional security

However the critics has argue that his long rule has weakened democratic institutions and concentrated political power.

Constitutional Changes That Extended His Presidency

The major reason for Museveni’s extended rule is the constitutional reform.

During his presidency the Uganda removed,

  • Presidential term limits and this allowed leaders to seek unlimited terms.
  • Presidential age limits this removed legal barriers that could have prevented the Museveni from contesting at an advanced age.

These changes were politically significant and widely debated.
