Zulfiquar Hasan appointed as the New DG of BCAS

Zulfiquar Hasan becomes the new DG of BCAS

The Union government has announced SL Thaosen and Zulfiquar Hassan as the new Director-General of Sashatra Seema Bal (SSB) and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), respectively. The DoPT has ordered that Zulfiquar Hasan has been appointed for a tenure up to his superannuation which is on 31st October 2024. The two administrators appointed are both from 1988 batch IPS officers. Hasan was serving as the Special Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in Delhi. He is a West Bengal-cadre IPS officer.

DG post for BCAS has been vacant since 4th January. The former DG Nasir Kamal opted for voluntary retirement and it has been vacant since then. In an additional capacity, the BCAS joint DG Jaideep Prasad has been handling the charge of the DG. The BCAS functions under the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and handles the tasks related to framing security-related protocols for Aviation operations.

The SSB chief’s post has been vacant after the incumbent DG Kumar Rajesh Chandra, who retired on 31st December 2021. The additional charges of the SSB have been handled by DG Sanjay Arora. SL Thaosen has been ordered to be appointed as the DG of SSB up to his superannuation which is 30th November 2023.

What is BCAS?

Bureau of Civil Aviation Security works under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India. It is a regulatory body for Civil Aviation Security in India and it is headed by the Director-General of Police. The designated DG of police in BCAS is The Director-General of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The DG is responsible for the development, maintenance, and implementation of the National Civil Aviation Security Programmes. The BCAS was initially established as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, in January 1978. Under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, BCAS was established as an independent department in April 1987. The main responsibility of BCAS is to lay down standards and measures in respect of the security of Civil flights at the International and Domestic airports in India.
