The 26th Hornbill Festival began on 1st December at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, Kohima, coinciding with Nagaland’s Statehood Day. This ten-day festival brings together all major Naga tribes to celebrate their rich traditions, music, dance, crafts, and local food. Over the years, the Hornbill Festival has become one of India’s most famous cultural events.
The festival’s opening ceremony started at 4:00 PM at Unity Plaza, Kisama. The Governor of Nagaland, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, hosted the event. Visitors enjoyed performances, traditional dances, and other cultural showcases during the inaugural day.
This year, several countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Austria, Malta, and Switzerland joined as country partners. Arunachal Pradesh participated as the state partner, highlighting the festival’s growing national and international appeal.
Before the opening ceremony, department stalls, exhibitions, and carnival events were inaugurated. These activities gave visitors a chance to explore Naga culture, buy handicrafts, and enjoy local cuisine.
While Kisama is the festival’s main hub, exciting programs are also planned in different parts of Nagaland, spreading the festive spirit across the state.
Originally started as a tourism promotion, the Hornbill Festival has grown over two decades into a globally recognized cultural festival. It attracts visitors, performers, and collaborators from across India and the world, offering a unique platform to showcase Naga heritage.
