7. World Bank approves $108 million loan for Assam’s flood management project
The World Bank has given the nod to provide a loan of $108 million (about ₹ 889 crores) to assist Assam in its efforts to improve its disaster preparedness and enhance flood forecasting. 9. S&P keeps India’s economic growth forecast unchanged at 6% for FY24
S&P Global Ratings has maintained its earlier projection for India’s economic growth rate at 6% in the fiscal year starting from April 1, with a further increase to 6.9% in the following year. In its latest quarterly economic update for Asia-Pacific, S&P predicted that the inflation rate would decline to 5% during the 2023-24 fiscal year, down from the current financial year’s 6.8%.
10. IDFC First Bank partners Crunchfish to demonstrate offline retail payments
IDFC First Bank has announced its collaboration with the Swedish company Crunchfish to launch a pilot project to demonstrate offline retail payments. The bank is going to participate in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) pilot project that aims to enable offline payments. The project aims to provide digital payment services to customers and merchants even in areas without network connectivity. This project will provide support for offline retail payments based on a Digital Cash platform to the payment ecosystem of India. 11. EPFO hikes interest rate on employees’ provident fund to 8.15% for 2022-23
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has increased the interest rate on employees’ provident fund (EPF) deposits for the financial year 2022-23. At its meeting, the retirement fund body has fixed the interest rate at 8.15 per cent. However, this rate is subject to approval by the Ministry of Finance, which ratifies the interest rate provided by the EPFO. The interest rate for EPF deposits for the previous year was 8.10 per cent, which was the lowest in over 40 years. In addition to discussing the interest rate on EPF deposits for the financial year 2022-23, the CBT will also review the annual accounts of the EPFO. The trustees will also deliberate on the implementation of the Supreme Court order, which grants Employees’ Pension Scheme 1995 subscribers a four-month window to opt for a higher pension. The EPFO has provided its subscribers with the option to select a higher pension until May 3, 2023.
12. Indian government forms committee to explore pension reforms
The Indian government has formed a committee led by finance secretary TV Somanathan to explore ways to address concerns raised by government employees over the National Pension System (NPS). The committee aims to find a middle ground between the fiscally imprudent old pension system (OPS) and the reform-oriented NPS. A Namibian Cheetah passed away at Kuno National Park in MP, India. The cheetah, named Sasha, was reportedly in good health when it was moved to India on September 17th 2022, but it was discovered that it had a kidney infection. This event was a setback for the project aimed at rejuvenating the cheetah population in the country.
