Hampi, located in Karnataka, India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is hosting the third Sherpas meeting as part of India’s G20 Presidency, with Amitabh Kant leading the meeting as the chairperson. The summit, organized by the Ministry of Cultural and External Affairs, anticipates the participation of more than 200 individuals representing 43 countries.
Set against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, delegates from G20 member countries and international organizations will engage in extensive discussions while immersing themselves in the cultural and historical richness of Hampi. For the eight-day G20 meetings held in Hampi, the state government has set aside a budget of Rs 46.7 crores. The summit is themed “Vasudhaiva Kutumbhakam” which translates to “One Earth, One Family, One Future”
The negotiations at the Sherpas meeting will focus on various key issues reflecting the Presidency priorities. These priorities were determined after incorporating feedback from the voices of the Global South Summit. The areas of discussion include:
Green Development and Climate Finance
Addressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainable development are vital aspects of the G20 agenda. Delegates will deliberate on strategies to encourage green development practices and discuss mechanisms for climate finance to support climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts globally.
Lifestyle for Environment
Recognizing the need for sustainable lifestyles, the Sherpas will explore innovative approaches to promote environmentally conscious choices among individuals and communities. Discussions will center on encouraging sustainable consumption and production patterns, fostering awareness, and developing initiatives for sustainable living.
Accelerated, Inclusive, and Resilient Growth
G20 members are committed to promoting economic growth that benefits all segments of society. In Hampi, the Sherpas will strategize on inclusive growth models, social protection measures, and resilience-building strategies to address economic challenges and foster stability and prosperity worldwide.
Accelerating Progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals form a critical framework for global development efforts. Delegates will discuss ways to expedite progress towards achieving the SDGs, focusing on key areas such as poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, and sustainable infrastructure.
Technological Transformation and Digital Public Infrastructure
Recognizing the transformative power of technology, the Sherpas will deliberate on harnessing digital advancements for inclusive and sustainable development. The discussions will explore the role of digital public infrastructure in areas such as digital connectivity, e-governance, digital skills development, and innovation.
Multilateral Institutions for the 21st Century
The evolving global landscape necessitates the reform and strengthening of multilateral institutions. The Sherpas will exchange ideas on enhancing the effectiveness and inclusivity of international organizations, fostering global cooperation, and addressing pressing challenges through multilateralism.
Women-led Development
Empowering women and promoting gender equality are integral to achieving sustainable and inclusive development. The Sherpas will emphasize the importance of women’s economic empowerment, their participation in decision-making processes, and the eradication of gender disparities across all sectors.
After intense deliberations in the day, the delegates will explore Hampi’s enigmatic landscape of monuments and boulders spread over 4000 hectares. They will witness the city plan, waterways, temples and other infrastructure built during the Vijayanagar empire that flourished between 1336 to 1646 AD. They will also experience the local craft and handicrafts and cultural performances from Karnataka. Guided tours will take delegates through the architectural marvels, including temples, chariot streets, waterways, and other infrastructure built during the empire’s reign.
