40 Tourism Projects to Revitalize Lesser-Known Destinations Across India

In a bid to promote sustainable tourism and balance tourist traffic, the Ministry of Tourism has approved 40 projects worth over Rs 3,295 crore, aimed at transforming lesser-known destinations into iconic sites. Spanning 23 states, these projects are expected to stimulate local economies and enhance tourism infrastructure. This initiative is in line with the past efforts to reduce overcrowding at popular tourist spots by focusing on underdeveloped regions.

Project Selection and Approval Process

The Ministry of Tourism circulated the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) guidelines to state governments, inviting them to submit proposals for iconic tourist centre development. By October 15, 2024, 87 proposals totaling more than Rs 8,000 crore were received. After evaluating these, 40 projects were shortlisted, receiving approval for funding. The selected projects will be developed with the infusion of long-term interest-free loans for up to 50 years.

Key Destinations and Expected Impact

Notable destinations include Rang Ghar (Assam), Matsyagandha Lake (Bihar), Town Square (Goa), and Orchha (Madhya Pradesh). These projects aim to enhance tourism experiences, generate employment, and foster local economic growth through sustainable tourism development. By spreading tourism activity more evenly across the country, the initiative seeks to ease pressure on popular tourist spots and promote more balanced, long-term growth.

Strategic Vision for the Future

The timeline for project completion is set at two years, with funds to be released by March 2026. Through this strategic approach, the Ministry hopes to create globally recognized destinations, reduce regional disparities in tourism, and support India’s broader tourism growth.
