5th Nagaland Honey Bee Day Celebrated In Kisama Village

The 5th Nagaland Honey Bee Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, under the theme “Bee & Honey Trials.” The event witnessed the presence of Deputy Chief Minister, Planning & Transformation and National Highway, T.R. Zeliang, who congratulated the mission and the accomplished Honey Bee farmers at both the State and District levels.

Nagaland’s Unique Beekeeping Tradition

T.R. Zeliang highlighted Nagaland’s rich beekeeping tradition, attributing its potential to become the epicenter of Apicultural activities. The State’s abundant nectar-rich flowering plants, favorable climatic conditions, rich vegetation, and ideal topography make it an ideal hub for beekeeping.

Transforming Tradition into Livelihood

Acknowledging the unique age-old tradition of beekeeping, T.R. Zeliang emphasized the need to transform it from a traditional hobby into a sustainable livelihood. Regular training programs on honey production and rearing have been provided to villagers, with the aim of improving beekeeping practices across the State.

Current State of Honey Production

The deputy chief minister disclosed that Nagaland boasts more than 1 lakh beekeepers, with an additional 25,000 introduced by the Nagaland Beekeeping Mission (NBHM) across 500 villages. The current honey production in the State stands at 440 Metric Tonnes (MT) per annum. However, to achieve the ambitious target of 2000 MT by 2030 set by the mission, intensive and concerted efforts are essential.

Quality of Nagaland’s Honey

T.R. Zeliang emphasized the unique quality of honey produced in Nagaland, attributing its health benefits to the non-use of artificial fertilizers in beekeeping practices. He highlighted the need for focused efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply, acknowledging that the domestic demand for honey far exceeds the current production.

Creating Avenues for Beekeeping Community

The deputy chief minister announced the opening of a “Honey Hub” at Kisama, creating a platform for the beekeeping community to exhibit and sell their products. This move aligns with the broader goal of promoting beekeeping as a sustainable and lucrative venture in Nagaland.

Felicitation and Book Release

The ceremony concluded with the felicitation of awardees and the release of a book featuring the inspiring stories of the award winners. Sentiwapang Aier, Additional Secretary to the CM and Team Leader, NBHM, extended the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and contributors.
