India’s Animal Husbandry Sector Records Gains in Milk, Eggs, Meat & Wool — BAHS 2025

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, in partnership with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, released the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025, a flagship publication offering an annual snapshot of India’s livestock production trends. The report underscores India’s growing prominence in global livestock output and highlights the pivotal role the sector plays in nutrition, employment, and rural incomes.

This edition captures detailed data on milk, eggs, meat, and wool production, with state-wise figures, per capita availability, and insights into the contribution of different animal categories.

Milk Production: India Retains Global Leadership

  • India continued to be the world’s largest milk producer, registering a production of 247.87 million tonnes in 2024–25, marking a 3.58% increase over the previous year.
  • Per capita milk availability improved to 485 grams per day, up from 468 gm/day in 2023–24.
  • The top five milk-producing states were Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, together accounting for 54.09% of the national output.

Production grew across categories,

  • Crossbred cattle: +4.97%
  • Indigenous cattle: +3.51%
  • Buffaloes: +2.45%

Egg Production: Consistent Growth and Regional Dominance

  • India ranked second globally in egg production, producing 149.11 billion eggs in 2024–25 — a growth of 4.44% over the previous year.
  • Per capita egg availability rose to 106 eggs per year, from 101 eggs in 2023–24.
  • Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka contributed 64.37% of total output.
  • The sector remains dominated by commercial poultry (84.49%), while backyard poultry contributed 15.51%, important for household nutrition and rural livelihoods.

Meat Production: Poultry Drives Output

  • India maintained its position as the 4th largest meat producer in the world, with 10.50 million tonnes produced in 2024–25, marking a 2.46% increase.
  • Poultry meat constituted 5.18 million tonnes, nearly 50% of total production.
  • Key producing states included West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, which together accounted for 57.55% of the total.

Wool Production: Rajasthan Leads National Output

  • India’s wool production reached 34.57 million kilograms, registering a 2.63% annual increase.
  • Rajasthan led the country with 47.85% of the total wool output.
  • Other major contributors were Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Himachal Pradesh, which combined contributed 85.98% of national wool production.
