Ahmednagar Railway Station Renamed 'Ahilyanagar' in Honour of Ahilyabai Holkar
In a move steeped in historical and cultural significance, the Ahmednagar Railway Station in Maharashtra has been officially renamed ‘Ahilyanagar’, paying tribute to Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, one of India’s most revered women rulers. The renaming aligns the railway station’s identity with the recent renaming of Ahmednagar district and reflects growing public sentiment for preserving India’s indigenous legacy.
The renaming was executed following the Union Home Ministry’s approval, after a proposal was forwarded by the Maharashtra state government, led by calls from local citizens and leaders to celebrate Ahilyabai’s contributions to Indian society.
Ahilyabai Holkar (1725–1795) was a legendary queen of the Holkar dynasty of the Maratha Empire. Known for her benevolent rule, administrative acumen, and temple-building initiatives, she is remembered for championing public welfare, women’s rights, and spiritual architecture. Her reign transformed Indore into a thriving city and her legacy remains a symbol of justice, integrity, and leadership.
The Ahmednagar Railway Station, located in the Pune Division of Central Railway, is now renamed Ahilyanagar Railway Station.

The station code remains unchanged as ANG, ensuring continuity for operational and booking purposes.
All official platforms, signboards, and timetables have been updated to reflect the new name.
