Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently launched a book titled ‘Assam’s Braveheart Lachit Barphukan’ in Guwahati, Assam. The event, graced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries, took place at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati’s Panjabari.
The book, authored by Arup Kumar Dutta, delves into the life of the legendary 17th-century Ahom warrior Lachit Barphukan. It highlights his significant role in defending Assam against the Mughal army, chronicling historical events and the enduring influence of Barphukan’s legacy.
To make the heroic story accessible to a wider audience, the book has been translated into 23 Indian languages. This initiative was suggested by Amit Shah during the 400th birth anniversary celebration of Lachit Barphukan in New Delhi.
Lachit Barphukan is celebrated for his role in the Battle of Saraighat, where he led the Ahom Kingdom to victory against the Mughals. His leadership and strategic acumen were instrumental in halting the expansion of Mughal influence in Northeast India. He is often equated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of Western India for his military prowess and resistance against the Mughals.
The book aims to bring forth the untold tales of bravery from Indian history, often overshadowed by narratives from the British perspective. Lachit Barphukan’s story is a reminder of India’s rich historical heritage and the valour of its warriors.
