Antim Panghal: India’s first-ever U-20 world champion in wrestling

Antim Panghal, a 17-year-old wrestler from Haryana, defeated Kazakhstan’s Atlyn Shagayeva 8-0 to win the title of Under-20 world champion, making her the first Indian woman to do so. The U-20 World Wrestling Championship was held in Sofia, Bulgaria. With an opening-round victory of 11-0 over German Amery Olivia, Antim Panghal prevailed because to her superior technical skills.

  • Antim Panghal achieves history by becoming the first U-20 women’s wrestling champion by winning the gold.
  • Antim Panghal is from the Bhagana village in the Hisar district of Haryana.
  • Antim Panghal won gold in the Asian Junior Championships (2022) and bronze at the Cadet World Championships (2021).
  • This year, she also took home silver from the U23 Asian Championships.
  • In the final 10 seconds of their match against Vinesh Phogat during the June Commonwealth Games selection trials, Antim had a 3-1 lead. Phogat then came back to win the match.

Antim Panghal: U20 World Championships

  • Antim Panghal triumphed because of her better technical abilities, with an 11-0 victory over German Amery Olivia to start the competition.
  • In her second match, the Indian wrestler defeated Ayaka Kimura of Japan by fall. Panghal faced Ukrainian Nataliia Klivchutska in the semi-final match, and she won the match decisively with a score of 11–2.
  • In the championship match against Altyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan, Antim Panghal started the fight with a double leg attack before attempting an outside head takedown.
  • The Indian wrestler led 6-0 at the half. Antim Panghal was content to play out the remaining three minutes of the round after the break and needed just one takedown to win 8-0.
  • The other wrestlers from India who participated in the final did not take home the gold.
  • Sonam Malik, a two-time U17 world champion, had to settle for silver after falling to Nonoka Ozaki in the 62kg final. India’s Priyanka fell to Japan’s Mahiro Yoshitake in a 65 kg final by a score of 0-8.
