AP Govt Introduces Lesson on India’s First Muslim Woman Teacher Fatima Sheikh

The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a lesson on the contribution of Fatima Sheikh in the textbooks of the eighth class. Fatima Sheikh was India’s first woman Muslim teacher and one of India’s greatest social reformers and educators.

She was known to have given shelter to Jyoti Rao Phule and Savitribai, the well-known social reformer couple who worked for the education of girl child.

  • Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule took initiative against the caste system and male Chauvinism.
  • Fatima Sheikh is credited with allowing the Phule couple to start the first all-girls school at the former’s house in erstwhile Poona in Bombay Presidency.
  • Fatima Sheikh taught at all five schools which were run by the Phule couple.
  • She on her own founded two schools in 1851 in Mumbai.
  • Fatima Sheikh underwent teacher’s training along with Savitribai Phule at an Institution run by Cynthia Farrar.
  • She, however, has not received the recognition deserved by her.
  • She remains among the unsung heroes of the country.

About Fatima Sheikh

Fatima Sheikh was an Indian Educator who was a colleague of the social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. She is one of the first Muslim women teachers of modern India. She started teaching Dalit children at Phules’ School.

Fatima Sheikh was born on 9th January 1831. She was the sister of Usman Sheikh in whose house Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule took up residence. On 9th January 2022, Google honored Fatima Sheikh with a doodle on her 191st birth anniversary.
