Asia Power Index 2025, India Ranks 3rd Among Asia’s Strongest Nations
The Asia Power Index (API) 2025 is an annual assessment published by the Australia-based Lowy Institute, a leading international policy think tank. It measures how effectively nations in the Indo-Pacific region can influence their external environment through economic strength, military capability, diplomacy, cultural influence, resilience, and future resources. The index uses 131 quantitative and qualitative indicators across eight thematic areas to rank 27 countries and territories.
In the 2025 edition of the Asia Power Index, India secured the 3rd position overall with a comprehensive power score of 40.0 out of 100, placing it behind only the United States and China. This is a significant achievement, as India crossed the 40-point threshold for the first time, officially moving into the category of a “Major Power” in Asia — a milestone that reflects sustained economic, military, and diplomatic progress.
Why This Matters: India’s elevation to a “major power” status in Asia is historically important. For the first time, the region clearly shows a three-tier power structure: the United States and China at the top as superpowers, followed by India as an emerging but influential force.
1. Economic Capability & Growth
India improved its economic capability score significantly in 2025, rising to the third spot even ahead of Japan in this area. This reflects strong post-pandemic growth, rising foreign investment, and increasing integration into global supply chains.

2. Military Power & Strategic Experience
Improvements in India’s military capability contributed to its rise. Events like Operation Sindoor in May 2025 demonstrated enhanced operational proficiency, increasing confidence in India’s defence readiness and combat experience. These gains helped boost the country’s overall power metrics.
3. Future Resources & Demographics
India also scored high in the future resources category, which includes demographic advantage (a youthful population), expanding technology ecosystem, and capacity for innovation. These factors point to long-term potential.
4. Diplomatic and Economic Relationships
India continued strengthening diplomatic ties through strategic partnerships with major powers and regional groupings (like the Quad and G20). The government’s focus on economic diplomacy and connectivity also supported its upward trend.
The Asia Power Index does not simply measure military or economic might. It uses eight thematic categories to assess a nation’s comprehensive influence:
This multi-dimensional approach makes the index more representative of a country’s real capacity to shape outcomes in Asia and beyond.
United States & China Continue Dominance
The United States retains its position as the most powerful nation in the Asia Pacific, with unmatched strategic depth and alliances. China remains strong in second place with robust military and economic resources, though the gap with the U.S. has slightly narrowed in recent years.
India’s Expanding Regional Influence
India’s rise to 3rd place signals its expanding regional influence. While still behind the two superpowers, India now stands clearly above other middle powers like Japan and Russia in overall capability and influence.
Challenges Remain
Despite its growth, India’s defence networks and power gap — the difference between potential resources and actual influence — indicate room for improvement. Strengthening strategic partnerships and diplomatic reach will be key priorities going forward.
