Asian Games 2026: India Defend Men’s Hockey Gold With 5-1 Win Over Malaysia
The India national men’s hockey team retained their Asian Games title by defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the Asian Games 2026 hockey final held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on October 3, qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This was the fifth time India won the Asian Games hockey gold. This feat came after India beat Pakistan 4-3 in the Asian Games semi-final match to reach the final of the tournament.
It was not long before India got the breakthrough through Harmanpreet Singh, who scored from the penalty corner, giving the Men in Blue the lead. In reply, the Malaysians equalized the scoreline after a couple of minutes.
However, India gained the upper hand once again in the second quarter when Jugraj Singh scored from the penalty corner. Hardik Singh further extended the lead to 3-1 after converting a penalty stroke.
India maintained the dominance in the final game even after the break when Shilanand Lakra scored in the fourth quarter. Harmanpreet again completed the scoring by converting yet another opportunity.
India were going into the Asian Games as holders of the men’s hockey crown after winning the gold medal at Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.
This 2026 success is significant in that this is the first time that India have successfully defended the Asian Games men’s hockey title. The aim to secure back-to-back gold medals was set out as a major objective by Hockey India before the tournament.
The fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold for India comes following its previous wins in 1966, 1980, 1998, and 2023, and now the 2026 win.
The Asian Games hockey champions get the ticket directly for the following Olympic Games. This means that India’s victory against Malaysia guarantees the men’s team’s participation in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Both Indian hockey teams were able to achieve this qualification goal at Aichi-Nagoya. The women’s team secured a 1-0 victory against the defending champions China on October 2 to earn the gold medal in addition to qualifying for the LA 2028 Games.
The 2026 Asian Games were the first to witness both India’s male and female hockey teams win gold at the same Games.
The female team beat the Chinese side 1-0 in the final match and clinched the elusive gold medal after waiting for 44 years. Lalremsiami was the lone scorer in the 10th minute of the game while goalkeeper Savita Punia saved a penalty stroke.
