Asian River Rafting Champions Take on the Sutlej River

The scenic town of Shimla has become the centre stage for the first-ever Asian River Rafting Championships, officially opened on March 4th, 2024, by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Competition and Collaboration on the Water:

  • The championship is taking place on the Sutlej River, near Basantpur in the Sunni region, from March 4th to 9th, 2024.
  • Around 20 national and international teams are participating, hailing from countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia.

Promoting Adventure Tourism:

Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering adventure tourism within the state. He highlighted several recent initiatives, including:

  • A successful river rafting marathon held in Nadaun, Hamirpur district.
  • A paragliding championship held last year in Junga, Shimla district, in collaboration with a private company.

The Chief Minister further stressed the broader impact of hosting such events, extending beyond the realm of competition:
