Belarus has announced a new visa-free regime allowing citizens from 35 European countries to stay in the country for up to 90 days per year. This policy, effective from July 19, 2024, is seen as an attempt by Minsk to ease tensions with the West, following recent geopolitical shifts and ongoing sanctions.
Under this new policy, citizens from Germany, Britain, France, and other listed nations can enter Belarus without a visa and stay for up to 90 days annually. Previously, these travelers were restricted to a 30-day stay and could only enter via Minsk airport. The visa-free entry can be utilized multiple times within a year but does not apply to holders of special passports such as diplomatic or official passports.
Belarus, traditionally aligned with Russia, had faced Western sanctions after President Alexander Lukashenko permitted Russian troops to operate from Belarusian territory during the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Recent moves, including the withdrawal of Belarusian troops from the Ukrainian border, suggest a shift towards reducing regional tensions. The new visa-free policy is also a part of Belarus’s broader strategy to improve relations and demonstrate openness.
This visa-free regime extends the existing policy that already applies to neighboring countries Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. Additionally, it will now include 35 other European nations, allowing for greater ease of travel and personnel exchanges.
The visa-free access applies through road and rail checkpoints, further enhancing Belarus’s connectivity with Europe. The policy is valid until December 31, 2024, and aims to foster better relations and promote tourism and business exchanges between Belarus and the European countries involved.
