BIS Launches ‘Learning Science via Standards’ Initiative to Benefit Students

‘Learning Science via Standards’ Initiative

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has launched the “Learning Science via Standards” initiative to promote science learning among school students. This program aims to improve students’ learning outcomes in science and promote an interest in science education by providing them with access to national and international standards related to science. The initiative is part of BIS’s efforts to improve the quality of education in India and support the government’s efforts to make India a global leader in science and technology. ‘Learning Science via Standards’ initiative for students, which focuses on providing lesson plans related to products used in day-to-day life.

About the lessons:

  • These lesson plans have been chosen based on their relevance to education and industrial applications, and will be transacted by BIS officials and resource personnel for an interactive learning experience.
  • The lesson plans will also be hosted on the BIS website. The initiative is in line with the ‘Standards Clubs’ initiative, which aims to establish such clubs in educational institutions across India.
  • Over 4,200 clubs have already been formed, and more than 3,400 science teachers have been trained to act as mentors. These clubs undertake student-centric activities like debates, quizzes, and competitions, including standards-writing competitions. Students are also taken for exposure visits to industries, laboratories, and BIS offices, which have been developed as learning spaces.

BIS provides financial support to these clubs for undertaking up to three activities in a year. This initiative is expected to benefit a wide range of students, including those in schools, colleges, and technical institutions, and contribute to their capacity building for engaging successfully in various economic sectors in the country.
