Carlos Alcaraz Tops Daniil Medvedev To Repeat As Indian Wells Champion

In the final of the Indian Wells ATP tournament on Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia in straight sets, with a score of 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.

Repeat Champion

  • With this victory, the 20-year-old Alcaraz became the first player to win back-to-back Indian Wells titles since Novak Djokovic did it from 2014 to 2016.
  • It was Alcaraz’s first title since Wimbledon last July.

Comeback from Slow Start

  • Alcaraz had a stuttering start to the 2023 season, including an early exit at the Australian Open and an ankle injury.
  • His success at Indian Wells proved to be a much-needed boost for the world number two.

Match Summary

First Set Tiebreaker

  • Medvedev took an early 3-0 lead in the first set.
  • But Alcaraz fought back, and the set went into a tiebreaker, which Alcaraz won 7-5.

Dominant Second Set

  • In the second set, Alcaraz took control and won it comfortably, 6-1.

Entertaining Rallies

The match featured entertaining rallies with:

  • Passing shots
  • Drop shots
  • Volleys
  • Lobs

Alcaraz even managed to retrieve a lob that initially looked like it would go past him.

Medvedev’s Ankle Issue

  • World number four Medvedev was hindered by an ankle injury, just like in last year’s Indian Wells final against Alcaraz.

Alcaraz’s Motivation

After a slow start to the year, the Indian Wells title provided extra motivation for Alcaraz as he aims for more success in the upcoming clay court season.
