CBSE Introduces AI Curriculum On Computational Thinking For Classes 3-8: Everything You Need to Know

At Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on the 2nd of April, 2026 Honorable Union Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched the CBSE Curriculum on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This curriculum targeting for those students who are from 3rd to 8th standards. This initiative is aims to equip the young learners with essential digital skills from an the early age. It is introduced under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and this curriculum will be reflecting the India’s growing focus on the technology-driven learning and innovation.

Vision Behind Introducing AI in School Education

Minister Pradhan stated that the launch of the new curriculum on computational thinking and artificial intelligence for Classes III–VIII marks a transformative step towards future-ready learning at the start of the academic year.

The initiative formally introduced structured AI education into the school ecosystem at scale, he added.

He further said that the curriculum was backed by structured modules, comprehensive teacher handbooks and the robust student assessment frameworks . With this framework it will ensure the early and systematic exposure to emerging technologies and laying a strong foundation for the learners of tomorrow.

It is aligned with the vision of AI for Education, AI in Education as said by minister.

Structure and Implementation Plan of Curriculum

This curriculum will be implemented from the classes 3rd to 8th which is from the 2026-27 period.

It will be aims to develop the AI-Ready learners with main focusing on the Computational Thinking (CT) Skills.

The AI-readiness so infused through CT Skills and it will help develop the capacities of learners to use computational thinking such as logical thinking, problem solving, pattern recognition and so on.

The Curriculum also aims to build strong foundations in computational thinking, digital literacy and responsible use of technology.

Relevance: Importance of Introducing CT and AI

Alignment with NEP and NCF 2023

The curriculum is aligned with the national educational policies like National Education Policy of 2020 and National Curriculum Framework 2023.

Under the NEP 2020 Vision it will try to achieve the the goal of making the India as the global leader in the AI and Machine learning by integrating early in the school.

Also as suggested in the NCF 2023 the learning standards should be (Goals, Competencies, Outcome ) like this.

Activity-Based and Experiential Learning Approach

Activity Based learning is driven by fun maths games, various puzzles and hands-on exercises which is using the specialized worksheets.

Also the teachers guide the students to break larger problems into the smaller parts. And also to interpret visual representations like chart and diagram type.

For the collaborative learning this curriculum emphasizes the discussions between peers and the group tasks to solve problems collectively

What is Computational Thinking?

Computational Thinking (CT) is the problem-solving approach that involve the breaking the complex problems into smaller parts, recognizing patterns and will be designing step-by-step solutions.

It is a important and foundational skill used in Coding, Artificial Intelligence and Data analysis.

To teaching CT early will helps to students develop logical reasoning and thinking.
