India is preparing its Armed Forces for future wars by adopting advanced technologies. On January 22, 2026, a major step was taken to bring quantum technology into defence systems. This new initiative focuses on improving security, communication, and decision-making in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It will help India stay ahead in modern and technology-driven warfare.
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan released the Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework, a detailed plan that explains how quantum technologies will be used in the Armed Forces. The document provides both policy guidance and a step-by-step roadmap for implementation. It aims to make India’s defence forces future-ready by using cutting-edge scientific innovations.
The policy focuses on four important areas of quantum technology. These include:
A major goal of the framework is to ensure smooth integration of quantum technologies across all three services. The policy highlights the importance of joint planning and cooperation among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This unified approach will help in faster adoption and better use of quantum systems on the battlefield.
The vision document is aligned with India’s National Quantum Mission, recognising the Armed Forces as a key stakeholder. It encourages close cooperation between defence organisations, research institutions, and government agencies. This civil-military partnership will speed up innovation and reduce dependence on foreign technology.
The framework clearly states that future wars will be technology-driven. Quantum technologies can provide a decisive advantage in surveillance, communication security, and strategic operations. The document sets clear goals and milestones to ensure India achieves technological superiority in the changing global security environment.
The launch event was attended by senior defence leaders, including Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, and Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit. Their presence highlighted the importance of the initiative for national security.
The Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework marks a significant step in modernising India’s defence forces. By focusing on innovation, jointness, and long-term planning, the policy aims to prepare the Armed Forces for future challenges and ensure India remains strong, secure, and technologically advanced.
