Centre Appoints Manoj Panda as New Finance Commission Member
The appointment of Manoj Panda fills a vacancy in the Sixteenth Finance Commission, allowing it to commence its duties. Panda, an esteemed economist and former director of the Institute of Economic Growth, joins as a full-time member.
Manoj Panda, renowned economist and former director of the Institute of Economic Growth, has been appointed as a full-time member of the Sixteenth Finance Commission by the Centre. This appointment completes the panel, enabling it to begin its crucial tasks.
Prior to Panda’s appointment, the finance panel operated with only three full-time members and Chairperson Arvind Panagariya. With Panda onboard, the commission is now at full strength, comprising four full-time members and a chairperson.
The vacancy in the commission arose when Niranjan Rajadhyaksha, Executive Director of Artha Global, cited unforeseen personal circumstances for his inability to assume the role. Panda’s appointment rectifies this vacancy, ensuring the commission’s operational effectiveness.
With all positions filled, the Sixteenth Finance Commission can embark on its duties promptly. This includes engaging in discussions with economists, experts, state representatives, and local bodies to comprehensively address financial issues.
The Sixteenth Finance Commission is expected to submit its report by October 31, 2025, outlining financial recommendations for the upcoming five-year period starting from April 1, 2026. The commission initiated its activities with its first meeting held on February 14, 2024.
